About the event
Join us for an insightful session exploring cultural beliefs and attitudes towards end-of-life care, focusing particularly on Medical Assistance in Dying (MAiD). Discover how cultural perspectives influence decisions, family dynamics, and perceptions of stigma surrounding end-of-life options.
Participants will engage in exploring ethical dilemmas through scenario-based discussions.
Here's how the activity will unfold:
- Participants will be presented with two scenarios involving MAiD, depicting different situations and perspectives.
- Groups will discuss ethical considerations, cultural influences, and potential consequences of each decision.
- Solutions and reflections will be shared, considering diverse viewpoints and ethical principles.
Activity Worksheet:
Scenario 1: Maria, a 75 year-old woman with terminal cancer, considers MAiD to end her suffering.
Scenario 2: Laila, a 45 year-old woman with a degenerative neurological condition, navigates conflicting religious beliefs and the consideration of MAiD.
Discussion Questions:
How do cultural beliefs about death influence decisions regarding end-of-life care options like MAiD?
How do cultural stigmas and taboos surrounding death affect our ability to discuss end-of-life care openly?
- Open to all - including those who are considering/pursuing, supporting someone choosing, grieving a MAiD loss, and/or professionals/volunteers
- Sessions are facilitated on Zoom by trained volunteer(s)
- No counselling is provided and participation is voluntary
- No cost – suggested donation of $5 per person is appreciated
